How do I set a product's web address and describe its photos?

Choose the end of a product's web address (its handle) and write a description for each photo. Both help search, and old links keep working.

This guide is for store owners. Not you? Supplier guides

TL;DR: set a product's web address under Website → AI Content → (pick the product) → Search engine listing → Edit → URL handle. Describe its photos under Products → My Products → Edit Images → Describe photos (alt text). Both change only your store.

What is a product's URL handle?

It's the end of the product's web address on your store:

yourstore.btab.app/products/oak-dining-chair
                            └──── handle ────┘

By default it's the product name plus a number (oak-dining-chair-6). You can set your own, for example oak-dining-chair:

  • Type anything and it's tidied: "Oak Chair — Café" becomes oak-chair-cafe.
  • It must be unique in your store, can't be only numbers, and can be up to 100 characters.
  • Leave it empty to go back to the default.

Yes. The old address, the product's number and any handle you used before all send visitors, and Google, to the new address. Your sitemap, product feeds and share links switch to the new handle automatically.

What are photo descriptions (alt text)?

A short description of what each photo shows. Screen readers read it aloud, and Google Images uses it. Without one, every photo is described by the product name alone.

In Edit Images → Describe photos (alt text):

  • write one plain line per photo, ideally under 125 characters, e.g. "Oak dining chair, side view with the woven seat";
  • leave a box empty to use the supplier's description;
  • or press Suggest with AI to fill the boxes from the photos, then check them and Save (nothing is saved until you do).

What this means for you

  • For your best-selling products, set a short, readable handle.
  • Describe the main photos of each product, starting with your best sellers. It takes a minute, and it helps both accessibility and image search.
